Overview:
According to the canons of beauty of the Khmer Angkorian period, the Devatas  were a fertility symbol and evoked pleasure, although their sensuality was always restrained. They embodied the vital forces of nature, arousing euphoric stimulation with their sensuous and voluptuous profile, with their firm breast resembling flowers about to blossom, deep navels, and full hips. The women went bare breasted and wound a long cloth called a "Sarong' around their hips, fastening it in various ways.

Their youthful face was suppose to resemble a full moon, fleshy lips, cheeks as fresh as fruit, and earlobes deformed by heavy earring pendants. Devatas wore improbable hairstyles, with their hair pulled up in such a stylized way that they resembled a tiara.   The floral contents and its symbolism was an extension of her sensuous and sometimes contorted hand motion which occasionally incorporated a hand 'mudra' or gesture. Like many of her companions she is generally found holding a root of 'Utpala' or Blue Lotus.

A superb Khmer Sandstone Torso of a female Devata figure, probably that of a celestial Apsara, beautifully executed in traditional Angkorian style. She once stood as a complete figure, a voluptuous maiden of Indra's court, gracefully poise with a slender profile, bare breasted, clothed only in a long garment worn low at the waist. She was a two-armed goddess usually depicted with hands in mudra, broad hips, partially clothed with or without ornamentation and barefoot.

This female torso is an early surviving example of statuary recovered from an abandoned temple in the Siem Reap province of northern Cambodia. The piece reflects characteristics linked to Angkor style statuary of the period, and demonstrates the regional style of an era whos art and culture was once under the rule of the Khmer Empire for several centuries, and is distinguished here by the exquisite craftsmanship and charming naturalism in which the figure possesses. The sandstone remains in solid condition without repairs, with flaws, pitting, and minor surface degradation throughout.
