    Title:
Antique Bronze Sukhothai Walking Buddha in Vitarkamudra, Ayutthaya Influence. 17/18th C. Thailand.
    Subtitle:
Late Sukhothai to Early Ayutthaya Style - An amazing bronze sculpture carved by an inspired, highly skilled artisan.
    Overview:
Buddha of the Sukhothai period are elegant, with sinuous bodies, which convey a sense of rhythmic motion as if by mystical means levitating. This style emphasizes the spiritual aspect of the Buddha by accentuating many anatomical details, such as being modeled with dramatically curved contours, having well defined broad shoulders, inflated chest, massive thighs and arms round like elephant trunks, long enough to touch his knees. The skin is smooth covered by a clinging diaphanous garment, draping the left shoulder, with the outline of the undergarment belt clearly visible at the waist, and gracefully descending down to the garment’s hem.
    Description:
An amazing rendition portrayed simple and elegant, with the elements of form and proportion typical of Sukhothai statuary, depicted walking with his right heel lifted and the left foot forward. The right arm draped to his right side, while the left arm is bent at the elbow with the hand raised in performing the 'Vitarka' mudra, the gesture of teaching and discussion.
    XXX
Buddha is modeled with smooth long limbs, shown wearing  clothing draped loosely around the body. The hair is knotted in snail-shell shaped spirals, densely packed with outlined curls of the head separating the hairline from his forehead, rising to a flame-like Ushnisha. The face is oval with realistic features, eyes are half-closed and contemplative, eyebrows arched, prominent nose, bow-shaped lips with an insipid smile, and a cleft chin. The entirety stands on a double lotus base with stamens surrounding the Buddha.
    Remarks:
Based on the style and accuracy of detail, this image of a Walking Buddha was probably produced during a transitional period when the Sukhothai kingdom began to lose its power and it was absorbed into the Kingdom of Ayutthaya.
