    Title:
Authentic Bronze Female Deity. Khmer-Mon Dvaravati. Pala Influence. 8/9th Century.
    Description:
An extremely rare and important divinity figure of a Female Deity unearthed from a Khmer Temple site in the Buriram province of northeast Thailand.
    xxxx
The image reflects characteristics from two interrelated traditions – one associated with the Dvaravati culture of the Mons in Thailand, and the other the expansion and control of the Khmer Empire in the region. Sculptures found at Buriram show an awareness of these two contemporaneous styles, which indicates that early Southeast Asia sculptures adoption of Indian aesthetics, illustrates the sharing of religious tradition in the form of their combine art and culture.
    xxxx
The female goddess is depicted standing with her feet apart in a slightly relaxed pose, displaying typical Indian style movement of the torso with supple modeling standing with a sway to the right hip, or ‘Tribhanga’ (Triple Flexion) posture. In Hindu she is classified as the goddess with the improbable hair style, a fertility symbol, fashioned with long braids of hair piled tightly into an almost cylindrical coiffure known as a ‘jatamukuta’ , embellished with looped braids, bound by ringlets and depicted in such a stylized way that it resembles a tiara.
    xxxx
She displays a charming attitude, well defined with harmonious proportion, unclothed above the waist decorated in elaborate strands of beaded jewels, hips covered with a long Sarong worn low at the waist with a sash draped to the garment's hem.     She is shown with her arms extended outward holding attributes, while simultaneously displaying various mudras. The left hand positioned upward in the 'Vitarka' mudra, the gesture of instruction and intellectual argument, while the right hand is pointed downwards so as to subdue objects that are the cause of fear, the 'Sharagamana' mudra, with the middle finger and thumb.
    xxxx
Her face relays a powerful blend of calm with downcast expression and introspective gaze, arched eyebrows above partially closed eyes, a prominent nose, wide bow-shaped mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes draped in elaborate earring pendants.
    xxxx
The image possesses a quality of stillness inherent in Khmer / Mon images, giving the sculpture a sense of spirituality that is characteristic of art in the Indian (Pala) style.

    Remarks:
The bronze Female Deity is an early surviving example of statuary recovered from the base of an abandoned temple in the Buriram province of northeast Thailand. The piece reflects characteristics linked to both Dvaravati and Khmer statuary of the period, and demonstrates the regional style of an era whose art and culture was once under the rule of the Khmer Empire for several centuries, and is distinguished here by the exquisite craftsmanship and charming naturalism in which the figure possesses. The bronze remains in solid condition with some partial alloy loss, casting flaws, pitting, and minor surface degradation throughout.
