Description:
An exquisite late 19th to early 20th century bronze meditating Sukhothai Buddha, from a temple precinct in northern Thailand, beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved with exacting detail. Temple blessed and consecrated, Buddha sits on a single level pedestal, measuring 17.50 inches (44.45cm) in height.

A spiritual image of Buddha portrayed seated in the 'Virasana' pose, one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands in mudra, with the left hand resting palm open on his lap, while the right hand forms the Bhumisparsa mudra, or Calling the Earth to Witness, gesture.

Buddha is modeled with broad shoulders, inflated chest, and a narrow waist, wearing a long sanghati robe in the 'Open Mode' worn diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered, with the end fold draped to his mid-section in a fish-tail notch.

The somewhat elongated head bears an ovoid face, with outlined curls of the head dip into the middle of the forehead, incised downcast eyes like lotus petals, set beneath arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, and bow-shaped mouth with an insipid smile. Earlobes are elongated and stop short of the shoulders. The head is cover by snail-shell hair curls, whorled, surmounted by a domed 'Ushnisha', rising to a tall flame finial.

Cast in the lost wax method, using a more pure bronze (copper) alloy, known as "Purple Bronze" identified by its heavier weight and rich reddish-chocolate brown colour hue. The core within the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, which is completely in tack.
