Description:
THAI RELIC: An exquisite 14th to15th century transparent 'Phra Hin Kru Hod' Stone Meditating Cowned Buddha, recovered from an old Pagoda excavation in the city known as "Meaung Hod", near the Burmese border, in the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand. These artifacts were discovered in 1958-1959 (Thais calendar year 2502-2503), during the Bhumipol Dam construction, which was to completely flood the city, and surrounding region. The Buddha images as discovery were originally modelled from high quality quartz stone mined from the earth. Transparent Relics of this type represent the God of infinate light - calm, peace, and contentment, and were typically used as commemorative objects, modeled in the form of Buddha images, placed in small clay vats within the interior walls of monumental 'Stupa' structures (conical towering spirals), which were constructed as religious sanctuaries.
Image Details:
A sublime Sacred Temple Image of a Meditating Crowned Buddha, depicted seated in the 'Virasana' pose with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. Both hands rested palm open in the lap, overlapping one another in the 'Dhyana' mudra, the Attainment of Spiritual Perfection, gesture. Buddha is depicted dressed in royal attire with the robe covering both shoulders. The diaphanous garment itself is simplistic in design, yet displays an elaborate representation of embellishments. A heavily adorned jeweled necklace, armlets adorn the figures arms, with bracelets at both wrist, and anklets just above his feet.

The face is portrayed with a refine remote appearance with almond-shaped eyes lowered in meditation,, arched eyebrows join in the middle above a prominent nose, a well shaped mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes rest at the shoulders. The head is adorned with a 'Mukuta' style crown, surmounted by a domed-shaped 'Ushnisha', terminate to a pointed radiance finial. The crown itself is intricately ornamented in jeweled patterns, and incised wire-like designs arcing the front. The surface of the stone was hand polished smooth, with detailing intricated executed throughout.

The surface of the stone is partially covered with remnants of gilded lacquer pigment, and encrusted soil deposits embedded throughout the creviced areas, from the environment in which it was maintained. Excellent condition, with a natural aged patina, without cracks, chips or repairs. Considerably heavy with excellent clarity and hand polished surface, revealing little to no inclusions in this sculpture.
Remarks:
Olivine green. This image was blessed and consecrated by Temple Guru Buddhist Monks, identified by the square gold leaf stamp front and back.
EARLY METHOD OF MAKING CRYSTAL RELICS:
Old Glass making in ancient Southeast Asia began with quartz, small pieces of the material would be finely crushed and mixed with 'halophyte' plant ash (a major source of alkali). The quartz-ash mixture was then heated at a fairly low temperature in clay containers to roughly 750 degrees celsius, until it formed a ball of molten material. This material was then cooled, crushed, and mixed with color agents to make red, blue, or green. After coloring, the glass would be funneled into a cylindrical clay mold and heated a second time at a higher temperature. Once the container cooled it would be broked and the thick glass ingots that formed during the cooling process were removed. Finally, hand-carved modeling, scraping, grinding, and polishing were the techiques most widely used during the finishing process of the object.
